Research & Scholarship
Dr. Rivka Edery, Psy.D., LCSW
Creator of the U-Model™ | IFS Institute Program Assistant |
Abstract Reviewer, NASW 2026 National Conference
My scholarly work integrates clinical innovation, implementation science, and trauma-responsive interventions to advance public health outcomes for vulnerable populations. Drawing from over 16 years of direct practice with complex trauma survivors - including combat veterans with moral injury, adult children of alcoholics (ACOA), survivors of sexual abuse and narcissistic parenting, and youth in foster care - I develop and evaluate practical frameworks that bridge intra-psychic healing (e.g., Internal Family Systems/IFS) with behavioral and values-based processes (e.g., Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/ACT).
Research Interests
Implementation Science & Clinical Innovation: Evaluating the efficacy of the U-Model™ - a visual, process-based integration of IFS and ACT - in reducing symptoms of complex PTSD, dissociation, moral injury, and secondary traumatic stress. The U-Model™ maps the therapeutic arc from trauma-driven reactivity (descent into parts-led survival) to Self-led psychological flexibility and values-driven action (ascent), offering clinicians a session-by-session roadmap with built-in safeguards for therapist resilience.
Public Health & Prevention: Developing scalable, trauma-informed curricula and training programs to prevent burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary traumatic stress among healthcare and human services professionals. This includes accredited CE courses (e.g., "Building Flexibility with ACT") and agency- and university-sponsored workshops that promote clinician self-leadership and sustainable practice.
Systems of Care & Vulnerable Populations: Examining trauma-responsive interventions within public health and child welfare systems, with a focus on intergenerational recovery for adult children of alcoholics, survivors of sexual abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics, and youth in foster care. Emphasis on fostering post-traumatic growth, attachment repair, and resilience through integrated, evidence-informed approaches.

Ongoing Research & Future Directions
The U-Model™ is not static; it is an actively evolving framework grounded in process-based therapy (e.g., Hayes et al., 2020) and implementation science principles.
Current and planned efforts include:
Pilot evaluations of the U-Model™ in clinical settings with ACOA, foster youth, and sexual abuse survivors to measure outcomes in PTSD symptoms, psychological flexibility, and post-traumatic growth.
Development of scalable prevention tools for clinician burnout in public health systems.
Exploration of the model's applicability in group, supervision, and agency contexts to enhance systems-level trauma care.
I welcome collaborations with researchers, universities, and organizations interested in trauma integration, implementation science, or public health prevention. For inquiries, contact me via the site or explore training resources.
